What is an ultrasound scan?

Also known as ‘Sonography’, an ultrasound is a scan that captures live images of one’s body on the inside. The scan uses the technology of high frequency waves to capture these images and unlike some other scans, there is no radiation involved in this. With this scan, one can get a clear picture of organs, tissues, and vessels in one’s body. Since there is no radiation involved, it’s the preferred method to check on a developing fetus during one’s pregnancy, but that is not all that’s it’s used for.

What does the scan detect?

Though an ultrasound scan is more popularly known for viewing the development of a fetus during pregnancy, it is also used to detect various health problems. An ultrasound scan is suggested to anyone who might experience pain or discomfort in particular parts of the body that would require the doctor to take a look at internal organs and tissues. An ultrasound scan can give a detailed view of the following organs:

  • Bladder
  • Liver
  • Ovaries

What is the procedure?

An Ultrasound scan is a fairly simple procedure that is also safe. Just before the ultrasound scan is done, you’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown and the part of your body to be examined will be left exposed as you are made to lie down on a table depending on which body part you are getting the scan for. A cold lubricating gel is applied to the area to be examined and a transducer is rubbed over the area. The transducer is a device that sends high frequency waves into your body and the waves echo when they hit a dense object, the echoes are reflected on the computer. Once the scan is done, the gel will be wiped off of your skin and you can carry on with your everyday activities.

Are there any side effects of an ultrasound scan?

There are no side effects to the scan as it is very safe and reliable. Depending on what the scan is for and which body part is being examined, you might be asked to fast for a while or avoid certain food and medications. In certain cases, you’ll be asked to drink a lot of water and hold your urine until the scan is over. You’ll be informed on how to prep for the scan before the scan. Other than the precautions you might need to take before the test, the scan doesn’t affect you in any way after it’s done.
