The Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) – 50 g, also called the 50 g Glucose Challenge Test (GCT), is primarily used as a screening test for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during pregnancy. It checks how the body responds to a measured glucose load and helps identify women who may need further diagnostic testing.

During the test, the individual drinks a solution containing 50 grams of glucose. A blood sample is usually collected one hour after drinking the glucose solution to measure blood glucose. Unlike a diagnostic 75 g or 100 g oral glucose tolerance test, the 50 g screening test generally does not require fasting.

If the one-hour glucose result is above the laboratory or healthcare provider's screening threshold, a longer oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT/GTT) may be recommended to determine whether gestational diabetes is actually present. A screening result by itself does not confirm gestational diabetes.
