X-ray - Barium Swallow (Adult)
The X-ray – Barium Swallow (Adult) is a specialized diagnostic imaging procedure used to examine the esophagus (food pipe) and assess the swallowing mechanism. In this test, the patient is asked to swallow a barium-containing liquid, which coats the lining of the esophagus and makes it visible on X-ray images.
As the patient swallows, a series of X-rays or fluoroscopic images are taken to observe the movement of barium through the esophagus into the stomach. This allows evaluation of both the structure and function of the esophagus.
The test is commonly used to detect abnormalities such as strictures (narrowing), ulcers, tumors, diverticula, and motility disorders. It is also helpful in diagnosing conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), and hiatal hernia.
The procedure is quick, non-invasive, and provides valuable information for diagnosing upper gastrointestinal conditions and planning treatment.
