Calcitonin plays an important role in regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism by helping lower blood calcium levels. This test is primarily used to diagnose and monitor Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC), a rare type of thyroid cancer that originates from the thyroid's C cells.
